Planting for the Future While Preserving the Past: The Redwood’s European Fernleaf Beech

Horticulturist, Nick Castrataro will discuss the efforts of the Newport Tree Conservancy to preserve the heritage trees that make the City of Newport’s horticultural history so important.  A prime example is the Redwood’s prized European fernleaf beech and the Conservancy’s work to maintain its legacy. He will outline the tree’s history and demonstrate the methods of replicating and preserving the living genome of this important tree.

Nick Castrataro is a RI licensed arborist with the Newport Tree Conservancy and co-owner of Morningstar Nurseries LLC in West Kingston, RI.  He has a Master’s degree in horticulture from the University of Rhode Island and worked as the Greenhouse Manager at the University prior to joining the Newport Tree Conservancy.  At URI, Castrataro also taught advanced courses in plant production, plant propagation, and assisted in plant identification and arboriculture courses.
