Eighteenth-century Philadelphia clockmaker Edward Duffield, a lifelong close friend of Benjamin Franklin, produced some of the finest Colonial American clocks, many of which are in important museum and private collections. In the first comprehensive biography, published in 2024 by the American Philosophical Society Press, Bob Frishman describes life in Duffield’s Philadelphia and the clockmaking trade at that time. The lavishly illustrated book, winner of three national awards, includes a catalogue of all known Duffield clocks and instruments. With more than a hundred fast-paced images, the lecture will cover the book’s highlights in a non-technical historical presentation that may be considered a follow up to the highly successful Redwood Library exhibit of Claggett clocks in 2018.
