Recent advances in 3D printing, soft robotics and bioinspired technology have found a variety of applications for deep-sea exploration. Dr. Brennan Phillips, oceanographer will present how these techniques make undersea technology smaller, cheaper and more functional for the modern ocean scientist. He will review the current state-of-the-art deep-sea robotics and imaging, with examples supporting undersea exploration in New England and around the globe.

Dr. Phillips is a National Geographic Explorer who has participated in and led dozens of oceanographic research expeditions around the world. His current research topics include low-light imaging of deep-sea biology and bioluminescence, soft robotic manipulators, hydraulic systems, distributed sensing, and low-cost, lightweight methods for ocean exploration. Dr. Phillips received his BS in Ocean Engineering from the University of Rhode Island, MS in Oceanography from the University of Connecticut and a PhD in Oceanography from URI’s Graduate School of Oceanography. Prior to joining the faculty at URI, Dr. Phillips served as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Harvard Microrobotics Laboratory and was the lead ROV engineer/pilot for Dr. Robert Ballard, the discoverer of the wrecks of the RMS Titanic.
