Stealing Rembrandts

Today, art theft is one of the most profitable criminal enterprises in the world, exceeding $6 billion in losses to galleries and art collectors annually. And the masterpieces of Rembrandt van Rijn are some of the most frequently targeted. Using Rembrandt as an example, Anthony Amore will explain the truth behind art theft–who does it, why, and what becomes of the art.

Anthony Amore is Director of Security and Chief Investigator at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, where he is charged with the ongoing efforts to recover thirteen works of art stolen from the museum on March 18, 1990. He has written multiple bestselling books, most recently The Rembrandt Heist, which was named one of the Ten Best History Books of 2025 by Smithsonian Magazine as well as The History Channel. He is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island (1989) and Harvard University, where he earned his master’s degree (but is less proud of that than his time at Rhody!).
