Portraiture as Performance: Fashioned by Sargent

John Singer Sargent was the leading portraitist of the Gilded Age. He made his sitters fit to be seen, selecting settings, pose, and often their clothing, manipulating fashion to create not just a likeness, but a work of art. In this illustrated lecture, Dr. Hirshler will explore what it meant to be styled by Sargent.

Dr. Erica Hirshler is Croll Senior Curator of American Paintings, Art of the Americas, at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She is particularly interested in the vibrant artistic exchange between the United States and Europe and in issues of national identity, transnationalism, and their implications for artists, as well as in the increasingly available opportunities for women over the course of the long 19th century. She has lectured and published extensively on American painting from John Singleton Copley to Hyman Bloom. She has specialized in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly with studies centered on John Singer Sargent and Mary Cassatt, whose artistic ambitions were integrally tied to Europe. Hirshler’s most recent exhibition was Fashioned by Sargent, an interdisciplinary project exploring Sargent’s portraits, fashion, and the construction of identity. Dr. Hirshler holds a BA from Wellesley College and an MA and PhD from Boston University. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Terra Foundation of American Art.
