Newport’s The Old Stone Mill – The Real Story
The Old Stone Mill in Newport, Rhode Island’s Touro Park has long been called “The Mysterious Tower,” with its origin baffling historians for years. Ownership of the tower has been attributed to many, including Redwood Library’s own Peter Harrison.
Two separate groups of researchers – Gray and Pape, Inc. in Providence, and a Newport-based group headed by Jan Slee and John Bagwill – independently researched the history of the Old Stone Mill to uncover its true story.
Through researching historical records, examining the structure of the Mill, and scientific testing – including chemical analysis and carbon-14 dating- Slee and Bagwill were able to determine when the Mill was constructed, the original use, and how and why the structure was eventually modified. Both independent teams reached the same conclusions, offering an evidence based resolution to the Mill’s mystery.
In this lecture, Slee and Bagwill will present their findings and address key questions about the Mill’s origin. “We have known for some time now when that Mill was built, as evidenced by the will of Benedict Arnold. We only recently found out by whom, thereby solving the mystery of Newport’s The Old Stone Mill.”
