Gary R. Sullivan, Antique Furniture in Rhode Island: Trends, Thoughts and Recent Sales

Gary R. Sullivan will discuss and examine recent public and private sales of fine examples of eighteenth century Rhode Island furniture. Of note, he will share his recent discovery of historically significant eighteenth century chairs with a familiar local history.

Mr. Sullivan is a nationally recognized authority on early American furniture and clocks, with keen expertise in the material culture of early Rhode Island. He has been involved in the antiques business on a full time basis for 44 years. As president of his Sharon, Massachusetts based business, Gary R. Sullivan Antiques Inc., he handles the highest levels of early American antique clocks and furniture. A multi-award winning author, Mr. Sullivan has written and contributed to several books and articles on the subject of important American furniture. His entries and essay relating to Rhode Island clockmaking in the popular book, Art & Industry in Early America, Rhode Island Furniture, 1650-1830 showcase his passion for the subject. He shares his expertise through ongoing appearances as an appraiser on the hit PBS series, “Antiques Roadshow.” Mr. Sullivan was also a co-curator for the Redwood’s Winter 2018 exhibition, The Claggetts: Master Clockmakers in Colonial America.
