Getting Away With Fraud: The Lansdowne Portraits of George Washington

To the uninformed eye, the Redwood full-length portrait of Washington seems to be by Gilbert Stuart or Jane Stuart.  But it’s a fraud by the British artist William Winstanley who managed to sell copies as originals.  This is the story of how he got away with it. His most famous copy, only recently unmasked, is at the White House.

Dorinda Evans has worked as a museum curator and university professor at the National Gallery of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, National Portrait Gallery, University of Illinois and Emory University.  She is the author of five books, Benjamin West and His American StudentsMather Brown, Early American Artist in EnglandThe Genius of Gilbert StuartGilbert Stuart and the Impact of Manic-Depression; and William Rimmer, Champion of Imagination in American Art.
