Drawing on her latest book, Divine Light: The Stained Glass of England’s Cathedrals, Janet explores what is arguably one of England’s least-known great art collections. Featuring a window from each of England’s nearly 50 cathedrals, together with Westminster Abbey and St George’s Chapel, Windsor, Divine Light reveals an extraordinary “national collection” of stained glass, still in situ in the buildings for which it was created.
From the remarkable medieval windows of Canterbury Cathedral, through the Reformation to the Gothic Revival, the Pre-Raphaelites and post war Coventry Cathedral and the innovative commissions of the present day, the lecture explores stained glass as art, storytelling and technical achievement – and the enduring power of coloured light to inspire.
There are fascinating transatlantic connections, including from Southwark Cathedral, a window by the great American stained-glass artist John La Farge, memorializing John Harvard, who was born and baptized in Southwark and whose legacy gave his name to Harvard University.
Janet Gough OBE, author, architectural historian and heritage campaigner, is the former Director of Cathedrals and Church Buildings for the Church of England and the author of four illustrated books on England’s cathedrals and churches.
