The 2017 Fall Life of the Mind Salon Series begins on Wednesday, October 4 when author Brian Coleman reveals why for generations Porthault has been synonymous with exquisite fine linens in his new book, D. Porthault: The Art of Luxury Linens. He will be on hand to trace its early years as a Parisian family-owned business over a century ago to the introduction of the first floral linens inspired by the Gardens at Giverny to its present day collections. The fascinating story of D. Porthault began in the 1920s when a newly wed couple in Paris created the first sheets in the world printed with designs. The family-owned company expanded from a design, weaving and sewing workshop to a second printing atelier in Normandy in the 1950s, and made its store debuts in New York City and Paris in the 1960s.
Brian Coleman's articles have appeared in magazines ranging from Old House Journal, where he is the Editor-at-large; to Period Living in the U.K. Brian is the author of twenty books on the decorative arts, including the recent titles Farrow & Ball and Fortuny.
A wine and cheese reception will be held at 5:30 pm, followed by the salon at 6:00 pm. Free for Members; $10 for Non-members. Seating is limited; register online below.
