Captured: The Corporate Infiltration of American Democracy

Thu, 02/16/2017 - 10:22am -- jrusnak

The 2017 Spring Life of the Mind Salon Series continues on Wednesday, April 12 with Rhode Island U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, who will discuss his new book, Captured: The Corporate Infiltration of American Democracy. Captured offers an eye-opening take on what corporate influence looks like today from the Senate Floor. Senator Whitehouse combines history, legal scholarship, and personal experiences to provide the first hands-on, comprehensive explanation of what's gone wrong, exposing multiple avenues through which our government has been infiltrated and disabled by corporate powers.

A graduate of Yale University and the University of Virginia School of Law, Sheldon served as Rhode Island’s Director of Business Regulation under Governor Sundlun before being recommended by Senator Pell and nominated by President Bill Clinton to be Rhode Island’s United States Attorney in 1994. He was elected Attorney General of Rhode Island in 1998 and served until 2003. On November 7, 2006, he was elected by Rhode Islanders to the United States Senate, where he is a member of the Budget Committee; the Environment and Public Works Committee (EPW); the Judiciary Committee; the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee; and the Special Committee on Aging. He is the Ranking Member of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Terrorism and of the EPW Subcommittee on Oversight.

A wine and cheese reception is held at 5:30 pm, followed by the salon at 6:00 pm. Free and all are welcome. Seating is limited; call 401-847-0295, ext. 112 for reservations or register online below.
